How to Check Suspicious URL? HTTPS and Domain Guide

The lock icon does not prove that a site is honest. Recognize counterfeit domain names by reading the URL structure and interpret automatic analysis results correctly.

Suspicious URL checking is the process of evaluating where a link goes, what it is asking from you, and its compatibility with the context. A single scan result or HTTPS indicator on the browser does not make a definitive trustworthiness decision. The goal is to gather information that will reduce risk before you click.

How do you read the URL structure?

An address can contain a protocol, domain name, route and query part. Just because the brand name appears in the link text does not mean that the target domain belongs to that brand. For example https://banka.example.com/giris With the domain name structure that needs to be checked at https://example.com/banka/giris The path at is different. example.com here is the example domain used for explanation only.

Letter similarities, extra hyphens, and unusual subdomains require caution. In long addresses, don't just look at the first few words. If the entire domain name is not visible on the mobile screen, use the method that allows you to examine the address without opening it before taking action.

What does HTTPS say and what does it not guarantee?

HTTPS protects the transmission between the browser and the server under appropriate authentication and configuration conditions. It does not guarantee that a site does not sell fake products, is not a scam, or that the file you download is harmless. Phishing sites may also use HTTPS. Exceeding the certificate warning creates a separate risk; Do not ignore the warning and continue.

6 steps to evaluate a link

  1. Verify the source of the message or post.
  2. Examine the actual destination address rather than the anchor text.
  3. Compare the domain name with the organization's address that you know independently.
  4. Take into account that the target is hidden in shortened links.
  5. Question why the requested information or action is necessary.
  6. If in doubt, use the official app instead of opening the link.

How should the results of URL analysis tools be interpreted?

A tool may show certificate, DNS, routing or some risk flags. The result "No findings found" does not make a newly opened or not yet recognized address reliable. Similarly, a warning should not be used as a definitive accusation without examining the context. Evaluate different data together.

Signed download addresses, password reset links, and private sharing URLs may contain confidential access information. Consider data sharing before submitting them to public analytics services. Do not share private links to corporate documents with third parties without permission.

If you entered information on a site

Determine the type of information you are entering. Sharing password, payment information and just name-surname will not produce the same result. If you have provided account information, log in to the relevant service independently and check your password and sessions. If you downloaded a file, do not open it; If you have run it, a security review may be required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the newly registered domain name necessarily harmful?

No. New sites may be legitimate. Domain age is a marker that can be used in conjunction with context rather than deciding on its own.

Are every shortened link dangerous?

No; but it makes it difficult to read the target. If it does not come from a source you trust and requires sensitive processing, evaluate it more carefully.
